At Crown we’re working hard to reduce our impact on the environment by implementing water conservation initiatives, waste reduction programs and energy efficiency projects that make real and lasting contributions.
To date, we've significantly reduced our energy consumption by driving a range of initiatives identified through a complex wide review of our energy consumption. We also work closely with our suppliers, employees, customers and waste management contractors to develop more sustainable production patterns across the total life cycle of products and services.
Our environmental sustainability commitment focuses on three pillars - water, waste and energy.

Taking Action on Water Consumption
- We've reduced our water consumption by nearly 25% since 2005.
- Our extensive rainwater and harvesting system saves more than six million litres of water per year.
- The installation of waterless woks throughout our kitchens saves a total of 1.8 million litres of water per year for each wok installed.
- Our Crown Towers upgrade resulted in a saving of approximately 20,000 kilolitres of water (eight Olympic sized swimming pools).
- Crown has laid 5,500m2 of artificial turf which is estimated to have saved over three million litres of water per year.
- Our customised laundry water recycling system reduced water consumption by 60%, resulting in annual water savings of 18.6 million litres.
- By implementing a regime of water saving initiatives, we have reduced water consumption during fire sprinkler testing by more than four million litres per year.
Taking Action on Waste Reduction
- More than 30% of Crown waste never reaches landfill.
- We have a large number of dedicated recycling waste streams including glass, plastic, paper, cardboard, polystyrene, printer cartridges, mobile phone, waxed cardboard, green waste, flourescent lamps and computer equipment.
- Through our organics recycling system, more than 100 tonnes of food waste is turned into compost each month.
- We recycled more than 80% of the construction and demolition waste during the Crown Towers upgrade.
- Our polystyrene recycling scheme is an example of our Life Cycle Management program. Each day we divert 15 cubic metres of polystyrene waste to a recycling facility where it is crushed, melted and re-used as office stationery.
- Since October 2006, Crown has engaged CMA Eco Cycle as the specialist contractor responsible for collecting all used fluorescent tubes for recycling.
- A green waste recycling system was completed at the Crown Entertainment Complex. The system collects and composts all green waste generated from landscape activities across the complex. The resulting organic fertiliser is then re-used on site to assist in the growth of Crown's extensive gardens.
Taking Action on Energy Consumption
- We operate on a natural gas tri-generation plant that saves around 25,000 tones of greenhouse emissions each year.
- The installation of 13 KONE lifts has meant a total annual energy saving of over 1.2 million kWh equating to 1,500 tonnes of greenhouse gas per year.
- Recent lighting system improvements resulted in a reduction of more than 4,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas.
- The majority of IT servers have now been virtualised resulting in significant energy savings across the IT infrastructure.
