Just over two years ago, our Chairman Mr James Packer asked that we do whatever we can as an organisation to provide employment to Indigenous Australians.
He had joined with then Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and Western Australian mining magnate Andrew Forrest to challenge corporate Australia to get serious about providing sustainable employment for Aboriginal people. We were the first employer to sign the Australian Employment Covenant, signifying a commitment on our behalf to actively recruit, support, train and provide ongoing employment to Aboriginal people.
The thing that we are most proud of is the number of Aboriginal people who have settled into permanent, secure employment and are building lasting careers with us. We have employed over 50 Aboriginal people and continue to maintain a high retention rate.
We recognise that we still have much to learn and many challenges lay ahead in this important work. Our vision is that the employment of Aboriginal people becomes a normal part of our processes and we are confident that as we establish a critical mass of Aboriginal people within our workforce this will happen. Until such time we will continue to dedicate our commitment to lead with a strong voice in support of this important work as we move it from a cause to a normal way of doing business.
